CI Goes Mobile – CI & CNBC Partner to Bring CNBC Social Conversation Index: Mobile Edition Powered by Collective Intellect

I had the chance to chat with Kaylin Linke, our Director of Dashboard Solutions about the upcoming CTIA event on May 8th and 9th in New Orleans. CI is partnering with CNBC to create The CNBC Social Conversation Index: Mobile Edition which tracks and ranks brands, phones, tablets, and carriers within the mobile industry.

What is CTIA and why is it important?

CTIA is a unique event in that every major player in mobile industry attends.  We are working with CNBC to make sense of social media activity.  Things are moving so quickly in the mobile industry: new phones, new apps, even new uses, and the tracker provides an easy way to understand how those movements in the industry are being viewed from the consumer side. And more importantly we can understand which products are driving increases in conversation around purchase language and actual consumer action.

What trends have you seen based on some initial analysis?

Not surprisingly, the fact is that more and more people are using their phones for social interaction beyond just talking.  Using the Mobile Phone tracker we are able to surface how often people are talking about using their phone for gaming, or listening to music or Tweeting. Another interesting way that we can slice the data is by intersecting conversations about individual phone models with those around carriers.  So if we consider the iPhone, for example, we can look at Verizon versus AT&T to see how the two carriers are stacking up.

What’s the difficulty in brand tracking across the social media landscape?

CI creates brand trackers for other industries, like Retail or TV and each presents its own challenges.  The sheer breadth of the mobile industry makes this a huge undertaking.  The good news is that using our combination of keyword & semantic filtering we are easily able to identify the relevant conversations.  So we aren’t just looking for mentions of where people use the word “apple”.  We are looking for apple as it relates to the mobile industry.

Any thing to add?

Yes, come by the CNBC booth (#5835) to check out each of the trackers: Phone, Tablets, Carriers and Brands to find out who is winning or losing brand value.
